Established in 1996, The Barycz V alley Landscape Park is shared between Lower Silesia n Voivodeship and Greater Poland Voivodeship, near the r iver Barycz. It is 50 km northeast of Wroclaw and covers the area of 8740 ha. Due to variety of natural habitats, the site is embodied in the Natura 2000 network. The Park includes nature reserves such as the Milicz Ponds reserve. The Barycz V alle y is the kingdom of birds, the largest complex of ponds in Europe, one of the most charming corners of Poland and the largest l andscape p ark in Poland.

THE MILICZ PONDS RESERVE The area of 5,324.31 ha covers most of fish ponds and some part of adjacent forests, meadows and other lands. The reserve includes 6 separate complexes of ponds created to preserve the rich diversity of numerous bird species associated with ponds and wetland ecosystems, many of which are endangered and rare. Th e reserve is also subject to international protection within the framework of the Ramsar Convention. The Milicz Ponds are one of the most important refuges of Greylag goose in Europe.

FAUN A OF THE BARYCZ VALLEY LANDSCAPE PARK 51 species of mammals have been encountered i n the p ark, including 23 protected species. F orests are home to deer, roe deer, wild boar and fallow deer i n certain places. M uskrat s and otter s are common in the pond area. Among the local fauna f oreign species, such as American mink and R accoon dog can be spotted. As for o ther mammals there is C ommon shre w and a number of bats: Brown long-eared bat, Grey long-eared bat and Whiskered bat. In the p ark there are 6 species of reptiles and 13 species of amphibians. 27 species of fish live i n the waters of the p ark, including Golden spined loach and White-finned gudgeon, both very rare in Poland. WILD BOARD DEER BROWN LONG-EARED BAT GOLDEN SPINED LOACH WHITE-FINNED GUDGEON

BIRDS OF THE BARYCZ VALLEY LANDSCAPE PARK Inaccessible alder s, old oaks and reed islands are ideal breeding sites. N early 300 species of birds nest here, out of which about 170 regularly. A mong them t he largest group are water and mud species breed ing o n the Milicz Ponds. In the Barycz Valley there are many species of birds characteristic of the area, which hardly occur in other regions of Poland. Rarely frozen ponds also provide favorable conditions for winter ing. 6 FLORA OF THE BARYCZ VALLEY LANDSCAPE PARK There are 42 protected plant species i n the park, 28 of which are strictly protected. Water plants and the ones growing on peat bogs and wet meadows comprise t he largest group of rare species, including floating fern, W hite water lily, Fringed water lily, Y ellow water lily or fen violet. Musk orchid belongs to very rare species as well as R oyal fern, Wolf’s-foot clubmoss and European centaury. There are also protected mushrooms, e.g. common stinkhorn and lichen, e.g. Iceland m oss. YELLOW WATER LILY EUROPEAN CENTAURY WHITE WATER LILY

FOREST S OF THE BARYCZ VALLEY LANDSCAPE PARK Forests cover 27% of the park. Forest stands on fertile habitats include riparian and alder forests as well as hornbeam and beech forests. They are of great ecological value and occupy large areas of the swampy Barycz V alley. Poorer habitat s are covered with pine or mixed forests. However, due to the abundance of ponds and wetlands, plant communities of waters, rush es, bogs and meadows are predominant in the vegetation of the area.
