4 What do we mean by ‘explained’? If we take a group of people, their weights and heights will vary. One explanation is that taller people tend to be heavier and shorter people tend to be lighter. The coefficient of determination tells us that 64% of the variation in people’s weights can be explained by the variation in their heights. The rest of the variation (36%) in their weights will be explained by other factors, such as sex, lifestyle, build.
