3 Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, school-wide, data driven, systems approach to improving social and academic competence for all students.

4 The central question is not: “What about the student is causing the performance discrepancy?” But “What about the interaction of the curriculum, instruction, learners and learning environment should be altered so that the students will learn?” GaDOE

5 “If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we........teach?....punish? “Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?” (Herner, 1998)

7  Create a Common Purpose  Define 3-5 positively stated behavioral expectations  Develop systems for teaching behavioral expectations  Develop systems for acknowledging and rewarding behavioral expectations  Develop systems for discouraging problem behaviors.

9  Exploration – Explore Evidence Based Practices that will match needs. Determine what it will take to implement new practice  Installation – Put in place infrastructure to support new practice. Make adjustments to allow for implementation.  Initial Implementation – Begin to implement new practices. Review components agreed upon in previous two stages.  Full Implementation – Implementation is happening throughout. Care is taken to implement with fidelity.

10  To achieve expected results schools must: 1. View PBIS as one of their top priority goals. 2. Continue to receive administrative support and needed resources. 3. Continue buy-in and commitment to implement new practices. 4. Participate in booster training 5. Monitor progress by analyzing data and reporting to all staff.

11 August - December 2011-12  Establish PBIS core team to address data analysis (Amy)  Establish commitment of staff with self- assessment survey and professional development (Amy & Pam)

12 January 2012-May 2012  Continue professional development for commitment  Begin monthly meetings with PBIS Core Team at the school level to define roles/responsibilities and continue data analysis  Attend 3-day PBIS Training with GaDOE PBIS Unit in February
