How to Apply for a High Impact Innovative Assistive Technology (HIIAT) Quality of Life Grant Presented by: Donna Valente Director, Quality of Life Grants Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation

Introduction High Impact Innovative Assistive Technology (HIIAT) Quality of Life Grant Program competitive grant program, launched in 2015 awards up to $75,000 each in one-year grants 2015 program awarded 5 grants totaling $342,485 2016 program expanded to award up to 7 grants Grants will fund innovative, one-time programs that target specific underserved population within broader disability community in the state

Program Details Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be implementing agency for state assistive technology program funded by the Assistive Technology Act One application per state accepted Current HIIAT grantees are not eligible to reapply

Paralysis Defined Broad, functional definition of paralysis: Neurological condition resulting in inability or difficulty moving legs and/or arms Spinal Cord Injury Stroke Traumatic Brain Injury Multiple Sclerosis ALS Cerebral Palsy Spina Bifida Transverse Myelitis

Underserved Populations Defined Proposed projects should serve Individuals with Paralysis and their Caregivers within one or more of these Traditionally Underserved Populations: People of color Ethnic minority Low-income Limited-English proficient Rural persons Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons Older adults with paralysis and caregivers Families coping with newly acquired disability

Funded Programs Will: Target a specific, well-defined underserved population within the broader disability community in the state Increase access to assistive technology services and equipment Increase independence or inclusion of people within the underserved population within their communities Produce demonstrable direct impact on people served by the project Use a new idea, method or device, or do something in a new way

New Program or Program Expansion Proposals may focus on a significant expansion of an existing program or service (to reach additional individuals in the target population) or Proposals may be a new project or service (to reach a target population that has until now gone unserved or underserved)

“PWD” is not enough Identify specific underserved population within larger disability community in your state Describe why specific population is underserved, including estimate of # people within specified population Criteria could include: age, geographic location, gender, type of disability, cultural or racial group, or other factors that prevent this population from receiving services The broad category “People with Disabilities” is not an acceptable target population for this grant

We can fund: Direct services to underserved populations We cannot fund: Food Direct grants awarded to individuals New Construction Indirect costs (also called “Facility and Administrative Costs” or “overhead costs”)

Collaboration To maximize project efficacy, it is expected that funded agencies will partner with other organizations in the activities of the proposed project. Partners are not required to commit funds, but must demonstrate measurable commitment that will increase probability of success of the project Letters of collaboration by partners must be included in the application. General letters of support may also be included.

Evaluation Please read “Quick Guide to Establishing Evaluation Indicators” Describe evaluation indicators you will use to measure success of proposed project Indicators must be combination of both input and output indicators, and must be measurable Describe evaluation methods you will use (surveys, interviews, focus groups, review of program documents as applicable) Describe who will conduct the evaluation

Evaluation Technical Assistance To more effectively demonstrate high impact of projects on individuals served... Grantees will be provided with customized evaluation technical assistance, utilizing cutting-edge multi-media technologies in concert with traditional evaluation methods.

Reporting Requirements Grantees are required to submit 2 reports Interim progress report is due no later than the end of month- seven Final project report is due no later than two months after completion of the one-year grant Detailed instructions will be provided
