1 Bowls Coaching Technique Analysis

2 Technique analysis SPORT BIOMECHANICS
Description of movement patterns Performance Efficiency Injury prevention Tools: Video Camera

3 Concerned with the internal and external forces on the body
Sports Biomechanics ? Sports Biomechanics ? Concerned with the internal and external forces on the body Internal External

4 The Coach & Biomechanist Biomechanist can assist with.
A coach must be able to: 1. Identify movement features and deviations 2. Describe positions, phases & actions 3. Explain causes & mechanisms 4. Predict effects & techniques 5. Recommend physical or technical corrections 6. Coach the athlete to make these changes Biomechanist can assist with.

5 How do we measure? 2D video analysis

6 What do we measure? Body positions Segment sequencing Distance Speed
Range of motion Acceleration Force / Torques Impacts Strength Rotational motion Anthropometry Muscle activity What do we measure?

7 Force – Motion relationship
= Motion Force x Time (mass)

8 Force – Motion relationship
= Motion Force x Time (mass) Increased transfer of body weight Increased trunk lean Use of gravity Larger step Higher backswing

9 Delivery – timeline breakdown
Setup – hold and address 2. Trunk initiation 3. Backswing …(initiate step) 4. Top backswing / start forward swing …(Heel of leading leg planted) 5. Forward swing 6. Bowl release 7. Follow through THEY ALL INTER-RELATE

10 How do we analyse a delivery
Identify the problem areas, after you have broken the delivery down into key events and phases, and have viewed video frame by frame. Work BACKWARDS – the inefficiencies will be caused by the preceding phase(s).

11 Principles of movement - SOME FOCUS AREAS
Trunk action generating momentum Appropriate step width and length Line of the bowl arm Timing of lead leg plant with start of forward swing Weight transfer / body position changes setting up bowl release
