3 WHAT IS THE DIGITAL PUBLIC LIBRARY OF AMERICA DPLA is a digital source of historical, cultural, and scientific information from around the country. It is a completely FREE database for articles, images, videos, historical records, and sound bites.

4 There are four ways that you can search or utilize the database. 1.Location 2.Year 3.Topic 4.Apps 1. 2. 3. 4.

5 When you click on MAP from the home screen you will be taken to this map. You can see how many items are tagged to each location. As you zoom closer, the larger numbers will separate into smaller sections of of the region. LOCATION SEARCH

7 Once you click on a document the link will take you to the source library’s digital publication. This would be helpful for a historical search of a particular place or region.

8 TIMELINE SEARCH Timeline search will take you to this search screen where you can click on a year from present day to 1011.

9 TIMELINE SEARCH Students can select a decade or year and find documents that relate to that time period.

10 TIMELINE SEARCH Again, when you click on the document that you are interested in, the website will link to the digital copy of the source.

11 TOPIC SEARCH When you select Bookshelf, you can search all locations and years for a specific topic.

12 APPS The Digital Public Library of America has developed six different apps that you can use in the classroom. All of these apps are free.

13 TIPS FOR USING DPLA IN THE CLASSROOM For Middle School and Above Can be used anywhere that there is internet access Can be used for science, history, English, math, and arts research All items found on DPLA can be accessed free of charge

14 USES IN THE CLASSROOM: HISTORY When studying the Revolutionary War, assign groups of students one year for each year that the war lasted. Students can research primary sources to create a first hand rhetorical account of the war.

15 USES IN THE CLASSROOM: SCIENCE Use in Science, to have students research the historical progression of scientific research.
