The war with China is taking so long!! I need more resources!! China is so bigggg! How am I going to conquer the whole of China??

Japan! You better end the war with China!!! Ha Ha Ha Never!

Fine! I am not going to sell oil or airplanes anymore!! So you want to be like that! I’m going to attack Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has rubber, tin, oil and timber! I need to get it! The europeans are too busy fighting in Europe so they cant really stop me! Hahahaha

But what about America? It is not involved in the war… What if America attacks Japan? hmmmmm

Japanese Attack Pearl Harbour 7 December 1941 To ensure that America does not send the fleet to stop Japan Warship, planes destroyed Many Americans killed Many Americans angry America enters WWII

Japanese in SEA Southeast Asia (SEA) countries under British/Dutch control Japan said it wanted to free them from foreign control Treaty of Friendship with Thailand 8 December 1941- dropped bombs on Malaya & Singapore.

Why was it thought that Singapore could never fall? Naval base facing Johore Military airfields in Tengah & Sembawang Gun positions in some parts Underground bunkers in Labrador park, Fort Canning etc Jungles- a natural barrier

But…… Singapore fell to the Japanese within 8 days of attack… Why?

Surrender! British surrender to Japan 15 Feb 1942 @ the Ford Motor Factory at Bukit Timah

Reasons for British defeat British weaknesses  Fighting in Europe  Not prepared to fight the japanese.  Naval base & airbase not equipped enough  Old and outdated planes and equipment Japanese strengths  Large modern airforce and fleet  Modern ‘zero’ fighters

Reasons for British defeat British weaknesses  2 ships “prince of Wales & Repulse sunk by Japanese  No tanks  Soldiers not trained in jungle warfare  Leader not forceful/ effective= Percival Japanese Strengths  Had tanks  Soldiers well trained in jungle warfare  Loyal to Emperor  Skillful leader, decisive= Yamashita

Lessons Learnt/Consequences  Loss of respect for the British  Realized that Asians could be superior too!  We should not depend on others to look after us  We must be prepared to defend ourselves
