1 ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION A mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (x,n,y) and operators (+,-, ●,÷). ex: 3x–5+m-8

2 ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY This property states that it doesn't matter how we group the numbers (i.e. which we calculate first) when we add or multiply. EXAMPLE ADDITION: (6 + 3) + 4 = 6 + (3 + 4) EXAMPLE MULTIPLICATION: (2 × 4) × 3 = 2 × (4 × 3) 9 + 4 = 6 + 7 = 13 8 × 3 = 2 × 12 = 24

3 COMBINING LIKE TERMS Simplifies an expression by summing constants and summing those variable terms in which the same variables are raised to the same power. Ex. 3x+7+5x-3+2x 2 = 8x+4+2x 2

4 COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY You can swap numbers around and still get the same answer when you add. Or when you multiply. Examples: 6 + 3 = 3 + 6 2 × 4 = 4 × 2

5 A number that is NOT multiplied by a variable in an expression or equation. Ex: In 2x+3 3 is the constant term Constant Term
