1 Learning Services Induction for Partner Institution Students As a student of Edge Hill University you have a wealth of resources and help available to help you complete your studies. The institution at which you are studying will provide you with teaching, learner support, study space and most of the printed resources, such as books, that you need. Edge Hill University provides you with digital resources – ebooks, journal articles and subject related information plus guides on academic writing, research skills and more. This presentation will give you detailed instructions on using these resources – how to access and search them and how to get help if you are stuck! The presentation will be forwarded to your course leader and the library staff at your institution so they can forward a copy to you if you wish.

3 Go to www.edgehill.ac.ukwww.edgehill.ac.uk Click on the padlock symbol at the top of the page. Enter your username (student ID number) and your password. Both of these details can be found on your Edge Hill registration letter. You will be logged into an area called the Go Portal and from here you get access to your Edge Hill University e-mail, the Library Catalogue, your course materials and subject specific resources in Learning Edge Getting Started: Logging in

4 At the top of the ‘Go’ page you will find a link to your Edge Hill e-mail, the library catalogue, Learning Edge and also some personal storage space on the network for your files. Your e-mail is a google mail account. Various departments at the University will use this account to contact you. If you prefer, you can change the settings so that your e-mails are forwarded to the inbox of an alternative e-mail account. From this screen you can also change your password, set up a profile and customise the content of the Go Portal page. To do this, click on either your name or Tools on the top right of the screen. Learning Edge, also known as Blackboard, is where you will go to access the module content for your programme area. Also, within Learning Edge, you will see a tab on the top of the page titled ‘Your Resources’ and it is here that you can find all of your essential subject specific resources information. 5 Your module reading list will be a list of text books, e-books, journals and digitised resources all carefully selected by your module tutor. The following section will explain how to find the items on your reading list. Your Reading List

6 The books detailed on your reading list will be available in print form at your institution OR digital form via the Edge Hill University Library Catalogue. Find the Library Catalogue at http://library.edgehill.ac.uk Or follow the libraries link from the Go Portal: Your reading list: finding items in the Library Catalogue

7 Type the book title into the middle search box. In the first drop-down box choose ‘Title’. In the third drop-down box you can limit your search to just digital resources using ‘Electronic Library’. Your reading list: finding items in the Library Catalogue

8 Click on the title you are interested in. You will see a symbol at the side of each item that tells you what format it is – book, ebook, ejournal etc. Your reading list: finding items in the Library Catalogue

9 To open an ebook, click on the title, then click on ‘An electronic book from…’ You will be required to log in using your Edge Hill University username (student ID number) and password. Your reading list: ebooks

10 You can read ebooks on-screen or you can download them to read offline. Find more information about downloading ebooks on your subject web pages, Blackboard or via Ask Us. Your reading list: ebooks

11 You can see the reading list for your module by typing it into the library catalogue search box – don’t leave spaces Choose ‘Module Code’ in the first drop-down box Your reading list: find it in the Library Catalogue

12 You can also search the library catalogue for books and journals using the keyword, author and Subject searches. If you choose Electronic Library in the third box, you will see items that you can read on-screen. Search the Library Catalogue

13 DISCOVER MORE is a single search tool that searches the majority of Edge Hill’s digital library. In one simple search you have access to thousands of books, journals and databases. Like any other search engine, search Discover More using keywords on the topic that you are researching. Accessing Resources - Discover More You’ll find a link to Discover More in Blackboard, on the Learning Services web pages and on the Library Catalogue home page:

14 To read a journal article from your reading list: Go to ‘Advanced Search’ Choose ‘title’ from the first drop-down box and enter the title. Choose ‘author’ from the second drop-down box and enter the author’s surname Click search Accessing Resources - Discover More

15 Your results are show in the middle of the screen. The right-hand column details the publication. Use the left-hand column to refine your results if there are too many matches. Click on ‘full text online’ to open and read the article – you can print, save or email the article too. Accessing Resources - Discover More

16 To search for articles enter your search terms into the centre boxes, choose which areas to search from the left-hand drop-down lists. Use ‘And’ in the right-hand column to limit your results. 17 The Learning Services web pages contain a wealth of information about the library services and support available to you whilst you are studying. They contain information such as where Edge Hill’s libraries are located, opening hours, how to borrow resources and how to get help with assignments. Learning Services web pages

18 There are pages specific to each course of study. Click on the drop-down beneath ‘Subject Resources’ on the right-hand side of the screen and choose your subject. This will open a page full of guides to finding information for your studies, useful links and news updates from your subject librarian. Learning Services web pages

19 Don’t miss the Assignment help link – here you will find guides on essay planning, academic writing, critical analysis and referencing – all vital for your studies. Writing at university may seem different to other writing experiences you’ve had but it is important to realise that it is part of a process which you develop over time (and not overnight!). Using the resources on these pages can help you to improve your understanding of what is meant by academic writing and assist you to develop and enhance your own writing. Learning Services web pages

20 Help & Contact For Help using or accessing your Edge Hill resources ask at your college or institution library or you can click on the ASK US tab that appears on all of our web pages.

22 SCONUL Access Would you like to be able to use an academic library situated nearby to where you live? The Sconul Access membership scheme allows distance learning students to join an academic library that is perhaps closer to where they live than their institutional library.
