Learning Objectives The course involves a careful instruction of English as both an academic subject and a foreign/second language, and is designed to enable students to study their major courses more effectively. This unit will focus on the writing process and public speaking, as well as general English language skills.

4. Writing 20% Persuasive essay Draft copy- 10% Final copy- 10%

5. Speaking 20% This semester focuses on public speaking. You will have to give 2 speeches (10%). 1st- impromptu speech 2nd- formal speech

6. Listening 10% Standard listening test in language lab

7. Reading 10% Standard reading test in language lab.

8. Grammar 10% Fragments Run on sentences

9. Exams Final- 30%

10. Attendance Please note that 5% of your English mark will be deducted if you attend less than 80% of your classes.

12. Writing Centre If you have assignments or essays that you want to have fixed for your major subjects, you can take them to the Writing Centre, where a TA will help you fix them up or improve them. You may not take English or ARW papers there unless they have already been marked by your teacher.

13. Speaking Corner Speaking Corner is held in Reboot Cafe at Greenwood, or at IE Hall. Look out for posters with exact days, times, and the names of the TAs.

14. Writing Centre Tutorials This year the teaching assistants will be holding writing tutorials in the WRC. These will be focussed on various topics that will help you research, plan and write a good essay. Utilise this!!!
