Board of Education, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the 1956 state flag. Analyze the role Georgia and prominent Georgians played in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s; include such events as the founding of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Sibley Commission, admission of Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to the University of Georgia, Albany Movement, March on Washington, Civil Rights Act, the election of Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta, and the role of Lester Maddox. 4 Booker T Washington is best known for the speech he delivered in Atlanta in1895; The Atlanta compromise. Booker T Washington has remained a controversial figure in African-American history due to this speech. 5 William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, educator, author and editor. From 1897-1944 Du Bois contributed immensely to the black intellectual and activist community and produced a number of studies that explored the social, economic, and political conditions of African Americans in Georgia and across the United States. 6 Born in Augusta, GA; John Burns-Hope became the first African-American president of Morehouse in 1906 and in 1929 John became the first African American president of Atlanta University (Clark Atlanta). Under his guidance, Clark Atlanta became the first African- American college in the nation to focus on graduate education for African- American students. Lugenia Burns-Hope is best known for her Atlanta neighborhood union created in1908; used to better the lives, and schools of African-Americans. 7 Born in Social Circle, GA; Alonzo Herndon was founder and president of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company one of the most successful black-owned insurance businesses in the nation. He was heavily involved in the community, he donated resources and funds to many Atlanta Charities. At the time of his death in 1927, he was also Atlanta’s wealthiest black citizen, owning more property than any other African American. 8 Born in Atlanta, GA; Walter White served as chief secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1929 to 1955. For the next ten years White's primary responsibility was conducting undercover investigations of lynching's and race riots. Using his fair complexion to his advantage. Did you know.. 9 Reverend Henry Hugh Proctor was the first African American pastor of First Congregational Church in Atlanta, serving from 1894 until 1920. key figure in the Social Gospel movement and a significant precursor of the civil rights movement. Did you know.. Reverend Proctor helped path the way for Martin Luther King and other African-American pastors from the south? Proctors church was used as a place for blacks to socialize and to hide during the Atlanta race riots. W.E.B Dubois was one of his closest friends, they both attended Fisk University together. 14 Born in Atlanta, GA; Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. King’s church (Ebenezer Baptist) was the first official meeting point for black leaders to discuss the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King believed in non-violent protesting such as: marches, sit-ins, speeches, and boycotts. Did you know.. Martin Luther King’s real name was Michael King? 15 Contribution(s) to Georgia history Born in Atlanta, Ga; Hamilton E. Holmes along with Charlayne Hunter- Gault were the first two African-American students admitted to the University of Georgia. These two brave people desegregated UGA in 1961. Upon arrival to UGA both Holmes and Gault were threatened and had to be escorted by police on campus. Did you know.. Hamilton E. Holmes was also the first African- American to attend Emory University. 16 In 1973 Maynard Jackson was elected mayor of Atlanta, making him the first African-American mayor of Atlanta, GA/ the first African-American mayor of a major southern city. His crowning achievement was building the massive new terminal at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. Later named Hartsfield-Jackson in his honor. Did you know..
