3 Review What are the four principles of marksmanship?
The four principles of marksmanship are: The position and hold must be secure enough to support the weapon. The weapon must be pointed naturally at the target, without undue strain. Aiming and sight picture must be correct. The shot must be released and followed through without disturbing the position.

4 Transportation Authorization
Authorization to transport ammunition is granted by NDHQ and governed by CF orders. Military vehicles transporting ammunition and explosives will be the responsibility of the base or unit that has a need to transport these articles.

7 Standards for Vehicles…
Must meet the normal vehicle serviceability requirements. Must be completely serviced (fuel, oil, water and air pressure) before loading. Must not be used to transport any fuel. Must not be used to transport any readily combustible waste material. Must be fitted with at least one authorized fire extinguisher. Must have a separate load compartment. Must have no openings in the floors.

8 Standards for Vehicles…
Must have a load compartment separate from the truck cab. Must be equipped with standard traffic signalling lights functioning on a maximum of 24 volts. Must not be used to haul trailers, other than semi-trailers, to transport ammunition or explosives on public roads. Must be designed with the engine located away from or under the load compartments.

9 Standards for Vehicles
Must be equipped with: A spare tire and the necessary tools. Two emergency reflective triangles. Transportation documents. Four dangerous goods placards appropriate for the ammunition and/or explosives to be transported. Prescribed antistatic bands. A set of tire chains. A tool capable of cutting high-tensile banding on pallets, for use in case of an emergency while carrying palletized ammunition. A sign at the back end of the vehicle, indicating that the vehicle stops at all grade crossings.

10 Check Electrical wiring and batteries.
Fuel tank, fuel lines and other elements of the fuel system. The body frame, the engine casing and the lower side of the body. The exhaust system. The brake and/or steering system(s). The spare tire(s). The tires, including the spare tires.

11 Vehicle Loads Must not exceed 80 per cent of the vehicle’s rated carrying capacity. Ammunition and explosives must be loaded, blocked and braced. Any load for which the height extends beyond the tops of the sides or the tailgate of the load compartment is prohibited, except for pallet loads. Electro-explosive devices (EEDs) or ammunition containing EEDs may only be transported when they are effectively protected.

12 Speed Limits Vehicles transporting explosives shall be driven at speeds within the limits of all local traffic laws and regulations, and municipal by-laws, based on road and weather conditions. In no case can the speed exceed 80 km/h.

13 Convoy Discipline Convoy discipline shall be strictly enforced enroute. Vehicles must be spaced at least 300 m apart. Vehicles shall be stopped in open country after the first 16 km and, thereafter, after two hours of driving. Such halts should be made at least 300 m from inhabited buildings and gathering places, only where there is no hazard to other road users. Vehicles shall not be left unattended.

14 Action when a Breakdown Occurs
Portable reflective triangles are appropriately displayed. If possible, move the vehicle to a safe place, at least 300 m from any residence. Any minor repairs are carried out on site, provided there is no risk of fire or other hazard. The vehicle shall not be towed until the load has been transferred to another vehicle.

15 Action in an Accident Take immediate steps to safeguard the load.
Warn other traffic. Keep onlookers at a safe distance. Notify the local police authorities. Examine the load. Contact the nearest DND unit and request any necessary assistance. Inform the consignor and consignee of the situation.

16 Action in Case of Fire… The driver must:
Ensure that the engine and all electrical systems are switched off. Make sure that the fuel shut-off valve is closed (if applicable). Have the fire fought using the extinguishers, making every effort to prevent it from reaching the load.

17 Action in Case of Fire The attendant must:
Ensure that the local fire and police departments are contacted immediately and informed of the fire and the nature of the load. Contact the nearest DND unit and request any necessary assistance. The driver and/or attendant must attempt to: Keep approaching traffic and onlookers back at least 300 m from the burning vehicle. Have a minimum 500-m radius around the area evacuated.

19 Confirmation… What measures must be taken by the competent authority when a vehicle transporting ammunition or explosives breaks down? Ensure that portable reflective triangles are appropriately displayed. If possible, have the vehicle move to a safe place, at least 300 m from any residence. Any minor repairs are carried out on site, provided there is no risk of fire or other hazard. The vehicle shall not be towed until the load has been transferred to another vehicle.

21 Compatibility Groups…
Loading ammunition and explosives with other dangerous products is prohibited, because it can increase hazards. As much as possible, only ammunition and explosives belonging to the same compatibility group should be loaded in each vehicle.

22 Compatibility Groups Inert items and ammunition and explosives belonging to Compatibility Group S may be loaded with items from any other compatibility group, except Compatibility Groups A and L. Packages containing dummy, display or inspection ammunition may be loaded on the same vehicle with all other compatibility groups, provided that these packages are properly marked, clearly identified and loaded into a distinct compartment separated by partitions within the vehicle load compartment.

23 Compatibility Groups…
Specific mixed compatibility groups are authorized for the transportation of ammunition and explosives on public roads. Items of mixed compatibility groups may be loaded on the same vehicle under the following conditions: When transporting ammunition and explosives on public roads over short distances (10 km or less) between stores and ranges, detonators in Compatibility Group B may be transported with items belonging to Compatibility Group C, D or E when a separate vehicle is not available.

24 Compatibility Groups…
Rockets and other components of complete rounds of ammunition may be transported in equal numbers to the ammunition to which they belong, in the same vehicle, without prior approval. Items in Compatibility Group G may be loaded with items belonging to Compatibility Groups C and D. When warranted by operational requirements and provided that safety is not sacrificed, a limited number of items belonging to Compatibility Group G may be transported in a vehicle containing items in Compatibility Groups C, D, E and S. All items must be packaged in their approved full-service standard packs.
