MAKING PARTICIPATION COUNT Sarah Ferguson Service Director: Enhanced and Preventative Services Pinpoint Conference – 30 th January 2015

What does “participation” mean?  Developing ideas  Taking part  Being heard  Shaping and influencing  Reviewing What does it mean to you?

Are we any good at it?  Improving picture  Areas of really good practice  More to do  Needs to go beyond statutory requirements

A multi-layered approach: Individual Practice…. =

A multi-layered approach: Influencing services

A multi-layered approach: Evaluation, Review, Feedback (You said, we did, how did it go?)

What do families tell us they want? (SEND Commissioning Strategy)  To be listened to and have their view valued  Whole family – choice and control  Competent and well-trained staff  Professionals to work collaboratively and avoid duplication – one conversation  Keyworker ( or lead professional) to help navigate the system  Transparency about what’s available and how to access them  Clarity about accountability  Flexible and responsive services – creative solutions to improve outcomes

What are we proposing? (Consultation on changes within Enhanced and Preventative Services)  Bringing participation closer to the centre – Children and Young People’s Voice Coordinator/Pinpoint  Whole family approach/ lead professional or key worker  Looking at opportunities for better coordination at a local level of services supporting children with SEND (eg Ed Psych/ Early Support/ Specialist Teaching/Sensory support) – based around children, families and schools – greater focus on the specialist support  Much closer links and better pathways with other preventative services eg Locality Teams  Increasing competency of all staff in relation to: SEND/mental health/domestic abuse/substance misuse/families with multiple problems/ children underachieving

Where we are so far:  Parents giving invaluable feedback so far – on line survey/ focus groups  Now processing all the feedback we have had  Thinking about next steps

Continuous journey of improvement  Can only do it together  Mistakes will be made  Journey of participation is one which needs constant renewal  Participation is not a one off event
