Revolution 1750-1795 Feel free to laugh and crack jokes

Women's fashion!

1750-1795  Cause: During the French-Indian War the world's imperial powers were at war over territory, resources and trade routes, bringing in different styles and types of fabric  Affect: France, already being a strong hold for delicate arts and major fashion taste, got an even more extreme import of other worldly treats, such as silk, cotton and fine metals

Over skirts and corsets  Skirts would have layers of silk, chiffon, cotton underskirts, and decretive fabric piecing's over top, paired with lace, velvet or beads, sometimes strung with actual gold thread.  Corsets would typically have a silk satin bodice decorated with either parchment lace or silk/satin. The boned foundations would be made from twelve pattern pieces, reinforced at places with up to two or three extra layers of linen.

The reason behind the hips  During the 17 th century and even some religions today, believed that wide set hips with a small waist and a wide set chest was the combination that made a female an ‘agreeable’ wife. Wide hips brought the assumption that you were more suitable/fertile for making healthy children, females caught onto the statement and then continued to make another statement. A fashion statement. Bolder than anything before that time!

Panniers  No hoop skirts from the 1740’s but panniers (saddle pads that strap onto the sides into the corset), an inverted conical corseted torso above full skirts was in hindsight a very high end fashion choice.  Extremely wide panniers were worn to formal occasions, while smaller ones were worn in everyday settings.

 The 1770’s were filled with extreme hairstyles which were built up extremely high, sometimes reaching 5 ft tall, and often incorporated decorative ornaments (sometimes symbolic for your social or royal status), there is a famous engraving of a lady wearing a large ship in her hair with masts and sails called the "Coffure l'Independance ou la Triomphe de la libert“  Translation:Coffure Independence or the Triumph of freedom!  Site: http://www.apparelsearch.com/definitions/fashion/1750- 1795_fashion_history.htm

Men’s fashion

A man’s wardrobe in the 17 th century  Macronis, brocades, lace, periwigs, tights and powder were things men would wear on an average basis, most ‘outfits’ or ‘costumes’ where a pure indication of social status.  Young men would be decked out in powder wigs, powder makeup and highly expensive outfits make of velvet, silk, or lace, most of the time sewn together with genuine gold thread, all in hopes of attracting a suitable match, or an official position in court.
