2  Located in East Africa, on the Equator  Population: 43 Million (2012)  Capital and Largest city is Nairobi  Features many national parks and wildlife reserves, with safaris being a popular activity for visitors  In Kenya they drive on the left-hand side of the road  Kenya is perhaps best known for its middle distance and long distance runners  Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1963  Agriculture is important to Kenya's economy, especially tea, coffee and flowers

3  June 1st  To commemorate the day that Kenya became a self-ruling nation.  main event takes place at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. The President addresses the nation, and the uniformed military, singers, and traditional dancers from around the country provide entertainment for the crowds.  festive activities, including family picnics and games in the public parks. Many people take this opportunity to go back to their hometowns for the occasion, and often a big meal of goat or chicken is prepared for the special day

8  Along Kenya’s coast, the food has been influenced by Arabs and Indians.  Spiced rice dishes are common and delicious
