1 CONSERVING PUBLIC LANDS Seizing Land by Armed Groups Part of Major “Course Correction” Cited by Secretary Jewell A Policy Speech from Secretary Jewell This speech also comes as Congress is considering Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy bill which would allow for the sale of a wildlife refuge. Jewell warned against putting lands that belong to all Americans for sale to the highest bidder. She noted that it is an extreme movement happening from Oregon to Puerto Rico. Secretary Jewell’s speech comes just two months after a violent occupation of a wildlife refuge in Oregon ended. Her statements make it clear that the Department of Interior will not be making concessions to those trying to repossess public lands, particularly in the West. Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan The Bureau of Land Management is working alongside the state and local partners to map out BLM’s 22 million acres of desert where wind and solar energy projects can be implemented, and which areas should be managed for conservation. Master Leasing Plans Plans are being created all over desert places to develop a blueprint for balancing energy development with conservation and outdoor recreation. Review the Federal Coal Program A comprehensive review of the Coal program must be conducted to ensure that the impact of public lands is included in the program. Ensure Adequate Government Spending Money is needed for investments in roads and bridges, and “green” infrastructure like checking spread of invasive species, building resilient coastlines, and restoring wetlands and watersheds. For 2015, the National Parks generated $32 billion in economic activity on a $3 billion budget.
