2 Founded 100 years ago, the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) is the trade association for the mattress industry. MRC is a non-profit organization created by ISPA to develop and implement statewide mattress recycling programs for states that have enacted mattress recycling laws.

3 35-40 million new mattresses/box-springs/year 100 new products sold generates 50+ discards Resulting in about 15-20 million discards annually U.S. Mattress Discard Market

4 Abandoned or illegally dumped A municipality, retailer or consumer takes them to a:  Landfill  Waste-to-energy facility  Recycler Sent to a renovator

5 Mattress Recycling ~50 mattress recyclers in U.S. Many are non-profit organizations or partnerships Most use manual labor to dismantle the mattress Processing fees range from under $10 to $50/unit

8 Funding Challenges Used mattress is bulky and durable Recycled materials have low/volatile value Competition from tipping fees Revenue earned is insufficient to cover the cost of collecting, dismantling, recycling and selling the materials
