Weight Control Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight by eating well and getting regular physical activity.

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.

 Begin only if you feel motivated and self- disciplined  Minimize exposure to tempting food cues  Take steps to boost your metabolism  Eat healthy foods  Don’t starve all day and eat on big meal at night

Factors of Obesity Lack of physical activity The remote control, video games, the automobile, television, and to some extent the computer are all part of the environment which discourage people from being physically active. Fast food infiltration in our culture You can drive down the road in many communities and pass five or six service stations, fast food restaurants, and convenience stores in less than a mile.

Factors of Obesity Negative Emotions Many people eat in response to negative emotions such as boredom, sadness, or anger. It has been observed that women with the most severe binge eating problems are also likely to have symptoms of depression and low self-esteem. Larger Portion Sizes People may be eating more during a meal or snack because of larger portion sizes. This results in increased calorie consumption. If the body does not burn off the extra calories consumed from larger portions, fast food, or soft drinks, weight gain can occur.

Factors of Obesity Genetic Factors Obesity tends to run in families, suggesting that it may have a genetic cause. However, family members share not only genes but also diet and lifestyle habits that may contribute to obesity. Separating these lifestyle factors from genetic ones is often difficult. Still, growing evidence points to heredity as a strong determining factor of obesity. In one study of adults who were adopted as children, researchers found that the subjects' adult weights were closer to their biological parents' weights than their adoptive parents'. The environment provided by the adoptive family apparently had less influence on the development of obesity than the person's genetic makeup.

How can we control our weight? Exercise daily Eat a balanced diet Get self-motivated and have self-control

Emotions  Depression can lead to obesity, using food to “comfort” ones self.  Boredom, eat when bored. This can interfere with our ability to maintain a weight because if we continue to have these emotions, most will go back to eating to comfort themselves.

Types of Obesity Prior to obesity you are overweight which is considered a BMI of 25-30. Obesity does not start until you reach a BMI of 30 or more. Then from there obesity has 3 stages: -stage 1 is a BMI of 30-34.9 -stage 2 also known as severe obesity is a BMI of 35-40 -stage 3 morbid obesity is a BMI of 40-44.9 Obesity and its affects on your health Obesity is a very dangerous chronic health issue itself but it can lead to a multitude of different health problems like: -Cardiovascular disorders -type 2 diabetes -sleep apnea -cancer -arthritis Type 2 diabetes is the most common disease that affects obese people

The way to calculate BMI is to take your weight, multiply it by 703 then divide it by your height in inches squared

Diabetes Diabetes: is the disorder characterized by high blood sugar and with either insulin resistance or insulin deficiency. This means that your body ignores insulin produced or just does not produce insulin to begin with: thus the body can no longer keep blood sugar in normal ranges. Diabetes and its affects on the nervous system and sensory organs. -nervous system: can lead to diabetic neuropathy, which causes the wear down of the nerves in the limps, torso, and head. It leads to eventually loss of sensation and automatic processes (digestion, sweating, and bladder control) - sensory organs: diabetes can alter the shape of your lens in the eye leading to rapid vision change. Also diabetes can damage your inner ear and retina leading to possibly severe hearing and vision loss.

Weight Gain and Maintenance Losing the weight is half the battle when it comes to beating obesity but the real challenge is how do you keep that weight off without later regressing back into old habits that lead to obesity. There are three things that if you do it will lead to a higher chance of losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight. 1.Change how you think- you have to be truly committed to the cause of losing and keeping the weight away. 2.you cannot use food as a tool to cope with sadness- many people associate a certain feeling with foods as then people use these foods to drown out these certain feelings. 3.You have to remove all temptations from the house- you have to remove all food from that house that is unhealthy and that will tempt you into over eating But this is very difficult to achieve since usually obesity is caused by more than just a unhealthy lifestyle. Obesity can also be caused by genetics and underlying psychological problems that will require extreme motivation to overcome.

What do we think of exercise? Many Americans view exercise as a second job that you come home to after one is done with their normal job. Also many Americans feel that putting off a few days of exercise will not hurt them but in the long run they will lose the motivation to work out in the long run

How Can we Treat Obesity?  Of course the most effective ways to do this are to have a healthier, more well-rounded diet and exercise often. Controlling calorie and fat consumption, as well as exercising to burn those excess materials are essential to maintain or lose weight. Some benefits:  Increased self-esteem and personal well-being  Being healthier helps your moods stay more positive and stable  You’ll have more confidence  All of these can mentally help you through the process

Other Ways to Treat Obesity  Obesity can also be treated through group sessions or psychological support from a psychologist  Group sessions in discussing weight problems can help the mental side of recovery by providing the feeling that you are not alone and have support  These sessions can help get down to the bottom of weight problems  Having a personal counselor can help you personally figure out mental roadblocks to losing weight or causes of overeating  Personal attention and support is also very important

Drawbacks of Obesity on Mental Health  Obesity can cause a general loss of self-esteem, especially if you’re trying to do something about it but it isn’t working  Having an unhealthy diet can cause mood swings and hormone imbalances in the brain. In fact, obesity is one of the most common causes of hormonal imbalance  Evidence from the Swedish Obese Subjects Study (SOS) show that clinical depression is 3 to 4 times more likely in the severely obese as opposed to people of normal weight  Binge eating may become more common  Anxiety and lack of will power are common effects  Research from the University of Texas at Austin shows a relationship that obese young women are half as likely to attend college when compared to women with smaller frames

Obesity Statistics  33.8% of all adults in the United States are obese; that includes 35.5% of women and 32.2% of men  Child safety seat manufacturers are making bigger models after a study showed that over 250,000 kids over 6 are too heavy to use them  Aborigines and the Pima Indians of Arizona developed obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension after transitioning to a Western lifestyle  Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States  From 1991-2000, the average weight of Americans has increased by 8.5 pounds  Airlines spent 275 million dollars on 350 million gallons of additional fuel in 2000 to compensate for the increasing weight of passengers
