List five input devices and three output devices that might be attached to a PC. Describe a typical use for each. Input: Keyboard- With this device you can type whatever you want, it contains letters, numbers, symbols, and other types of uses. Mouse- Designed to move a pointer around the screen and point to specific characters or objects. multi-touch- It’s possible to use multi-finger or multi-hand gestures to accomplish complex tasks quickly.

Touch screen- Responds when user points to or touches different screen regions. Optical mark readers- Use reflected light to determine the location of pencil marks on standardized test answer sheets and similar forms.

Output: Monitor- Serves as a one-way window between the computer user and the machine. Today’s monitors are likely to present graphics, photographic images, animation, and video. Printer- Can produce a hard copy on paper of any static information that can be displayed on the computer’s screen. Facsimile (fax) machine- Is a tool for long-distance copying of paper documents.

Describe the advantages of storing your data on Blu-ray discs instead of DVD discs. Are there any disadvantages? Some advantages of storing data on Blu-ray disc instead of DVD discs are: Blu-ray discs have a bigger capacity than DVD, discs can’t be used in CD or DVD drives. BD-ROM and BD-R discs can’t be erased and rewritten. The disadvantage of saving it on Blu-ray is that it can be rewritten but it has to be reformatted first.

Name and describe three special-purpose input device and one output device people commonly use in public places, such as banks, stores, and libraries. INPUT:  Bar code readers- Use light to read universal product codes (UPCs), inventory codes, and other codes created from patterns. This device is used in stored and are attached to point-of-scale terminal.  Radio Frequency identification (RFID) readers- Use radio waves to communicate with radio frequency identification tags. When a reader energizes it the tag broadcasts its unique identification number to the reader.  Speech recognition software- Can convert voice data into words that can be edited and printed. This is used in offices.

OUTPUT: Printer- Can produce a hard copy on paper of any static information that can be displayed on the computer’s screen. There are two basic groups: impact and nonimpact printers. Impact printers form images by physically striking paper, but nonimpact printers have replaced them in most offices, schools, and homes. The two main types are laser printers that can quickly print a lot of pages, and inkjet printers that spray ink directly in paper to produce printed text and graphic images.

Many people find that the mouse is impractical for use as a pointing device on a laptop computer. Describe at least three alternatives. A wireless mouse is better because you can drag it wherever you want and it has less probability to get stuck that the one of the laptop. The mouse of a laptop can get sticky and fail, so it will also be better to connect another mouse, and that way it won´t fail. If you don´t like the mouse of the laptop you can use command keys in the laptop, instead of clicking with the mouse.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of flash memory devices over hard disks as storage media? ADVANTAGES: You can carry a flash drive on keychains so you can easily transport documents, pictures, songs, and even movies between computers. A key-sized flash drive can plug directly into a USB port. It can be loaded with data, removed, and plugged into another computer’s USB port regardless of the model of the computer.

Disadvantages Flash memory is still too expensive to replace spinning drives in all computers, but as prices drop and production rises, solid state memory is almost certain to become the storage standard. The hard disk has a higher capacity, and flash memory may require a card reader to connect to computer.

Describe at least three common audio output devices for PCs, and explain how each of them might be used. Headphones: They are powerful speakers that can be attached to your ears, you can wear them when you don’t want anyone else to hear. Speakers: They are designed mostly for playing system sounds and spoken records, not for high-fidelity music playback. Headset- They are particularly useful for telephone and teleconferencing applications. The secretaries and McDonald’s workers use it a lot.
