4 1. The AFRHINET project is a 3-year capacity-building project which aims to explore the link between rainwater harvesting storage technologies and small-scale irrigation in rural arid and semi-arid areas of sub- Saharan Africa Timeframe: March 2014 to February 2017

5 WHY? 1. Rainwater management at a small-scale farmer level can help to address food insecurity 2. RWH management has the potential to alleviate poverty, restore degraded lands and help to adapt to climate variability and change!

Objectives of the project 1.To foster scientific and technological capacities in order to adequately implement RWHI management  Advanced Courses and Training Materials 2.To capitalise and disseminate innovative research, know-how and cost-effective technologies  Technology Transfer and Adoption Centres 3.To strengthen the networking capacity of S&T community with other relevant stakeholders  Transnational Network 4.To promote RWHI management for small-scale irrigated agriculture during the dry season

8 4. Stakeholders Higher Education Institutions (HEI) International/national research institutions Practitioners: NGOs, private and public Businesses/micro-enterprises Local authorities Local communities: especially women, entrepreneurs and vulnerable groups

Activities of the AFRHINET project so far (I) –International and national dissemination events and workshops in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Germany –Establishment of the AFRHINET transnational Network –Establishment of the Research and Technology Transfer Centres in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe –National baseline studies on RWHI in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe –1st International RWH Symposium in Ethiopia –Active promotion and dissemination of RWHI

What is coming up to 2017 and beyond (II) –Capacity-building courses for scientists, practitioners, policy- makers and local communities –Training materials –Demonstration trials –Policy recommendations –Virtual Technology and Transfer Centres –International symposiums in Ethiopia and Mozambique –Follow-up activities All activities will be implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe

Today  Today we host an international dissemination and round table event in Harare  Raising awareness on rainwater harvesting technologies for small-scale irrigation: Capacity-Building, Technology Transfer and Scaling-Up  We will introduce the good work done by various organisations in Zimbabwe and the AFRHINET partners  We hope to inform one another and foster information exchange and networking (please contribute)
