Unit 4: Salary and Time Management

Unit 4 Project We discussed resumes last week. This week you are going to go to the site listed under Unit 4. Go through the registration process. Create an account. You are going to go through the interview process Click on the “initial face-to-face interview”. Select 10 questions, and Pick a person to interview you (mom, dad, significant other, adult child, friend…just pick one). Take a Screen Shot of the final screen before you exit and put in the drop box.

Print Screen On a laptop you will see up in the right hand corner a button that says “prnt scrn” when you hit this button it does not actually print it is taking a picture of what is on your desktop. You will open up a word document, and click on the paste icon; this will paste that picture of your desktop into a word document. Save it so you know it is for unit 4 project and submit it to the dropbox. If you have a keyboard for a Desktop computer, the print screen button is above the insert button. Follow the same directions as above.

Show me the money!!! What are some of the factors that will get you the money you want as a transcriptionist? Competence and Experience Speed and Efficiency Risk Tolerance Employee vs. Contractor Geographic location Willingness to Accept Change

Hourly vs. Line count Which one are you more likely to make the money at? Jane does 880 lines in an 8 hour shift at $.08 a line how much did she make for the day? Michelle also works 8 hours at $12.50 an hour. How much did she make for the day?

Hourly vs. Line count Jane does 880 lines in an 8 hour shift at $.08 a line how much did she make for the day? How many hours she worked doesn’t matter because she could have done that many lines in 6 hours or 9 hours and the pay is the same. 880 *.08 = $70.40 daily Michelle also works 8 hours at $12.50 an hour. How much did she make for the day? 12.50*8=$100.00 daily Who has the potential to make more? Why?

How do you do it? When you are vying for a job, what will make you stand out the most? Why should I hire you? Sell yourself? Stay on the right track, don’t state the obvious (I need a job). Develop your sales pitch Be detailed but don’t babble on (this one time at band camp); give examples of what you have done in relation to the job. What are some examples you might mention?

How do you do it? (cont) For those of you that haven’t worked or have been limited on work mention the traits UNIQUE to you. Energy Personality Working style People skills Patience (all mothers have this to an extent) Organizational skills (we do this when we clean house) Attention to detail (even when reading our favorite book) You have more skills than you think you do.

Top 10 Tips to make more money 1-5 6-10 Be Persuasive (not pushy) Aim high, but be realistic Tone (don’t be demanding) Clarify your interests (mention all the possibilities such as profit sharing, stock options, bonus’, more responsibilities) Anticipate their interests Create several options (brainstorm, what works for you, what works for them) Focus on objective criteria (do your research..look at the competition) Think through your alternatives (Plan B) Prepare to achieve your goals (invest the time and energy to get what you want) Review to learn (reflect on what you can do differently)

Time & Stress Management Time and Stress Management are mindsets. In my opinion, organization is the key to both these management issues. Both will impact your performance at home and at work. How many have heard or said yourselves; I work better under pressure? Well pressure can also add stress which can add to things being missed or done incorrectly.

Stress Management Stress is how your body reacts to tense situations. Think of it first at home. How do you react? How is it different at work? Negative and Positive Stress Negative (when you lose control of temper and it becomes unproductive) Positive (when you are productive and you gain strength from it…the I work better under pressure comment).

Stress Management How do you avoid stress? You can’t it is how you deal with it that makes it positive or negative and even if it starts our positive can become negative. Be aware of what is causing stress and don’t ignore it. What happens when you ignore it? It will automatically become negative stress and you will lose control.

Dealing with stress Identify Recognize Take steps Practice stress relief STRESS RELIEF How do you relieve stress at home? Exercise, diet, time for yourself, hot shower or bath, napping, family time, alcohol, prescription medication. All of these are common amongst most; however, alcohol and prescription medications can cause mood swings that can turn into negative stress instead of relief.

Stress Relief So we can’t take a bath, alcohol, have so-called me time…so what do we do at work to relieve stress? Have an outlet Go for a quick walk on your break Breathing exercises Get organized Power nap Balanced Diet (lunch) Someone to talk to (vent (positively), share ideas to find solutions).

Time Management How do you manage you time. Do you have enough time in a day for everything you need to do? Why don’t you? Or do you? Without time management you will more likely spend more time on a project than needed.

Time Management Tips Keep a Calendar of events for home and work. Make a list and prioritize. Keep a time log. Organize your work area. Avoid time wasters (small activities that are nonproductive). Practice a one-touch policy (meaning prioritize after you have touched whatever it may be letter, memo, file etc..) Set a time to address all correspondence at once rather it be regular mail or email. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

The End See you all next week……
