PROBLEM  Which activity increases your heart rate the most in a 60 second time period ?  Push- ups  Running  Jumping Jacks  Sit-Ups  Resting

HYPOTHESIS  If our subject does jumping jacks for 60 seconds, then their heart rate will increase the most.

VARIABLES  Independent Variable: Type of exercise  Dependent Variable: Heart rate (BPM)  Controlled Variables: The person, The stopwatch, Time of activity

MATERIALS  Stop watch  A Test Subject

PROCEDURE  1. Rest for fifteen seconds and record heart rate.  2. Complete an exercise from the list for 1 minute or 60 seconds.  3. Place two fingers on the side of your neck and count how many time it beats for ten seconds.  4.Multiply your result by 6.  5. Record your results on the data table.  6. Rest for 4 minutes  7. Repeat steps 2-6 until each activity is finished.

CONCLUSION & REFLECTION  Our hypothesis was that if a person does jumping jacks, then his or her heart rate would increase the most. Our results do support our hypothesis. According to our experiment, the average heart rate when the person was resting was 102. When our subject was doing push-ups, his average heart rate was 154. The average heart rate was 156 when the subject was running. When the subject did sit-ups, the average heart rate was 150. The average heart rate was 160 when the subject was doing jumping jacks. Our heart rate experiment showed that more cardio introduced to the body, the higher the pulse. The activity with the highest pulse rate (jumping jacks) required the most energy to accomplish. The heart rate however, may be affected by the condition of the body.  If we could do this project again we would have had a larger amount of time in between activities to make the results more accurate. However, our range of activities worked well in the broad spectrum of it all.
