By Roger of Wendover - Monk John was a tyrant not a king, a destroyer instead of a governor, crushing his own people. He had lost the duchy of Normandy and many other lands because of his laziness. He invaded and destroyed his subjects’ property. He gave orders that his wife’s lovers were to he seized and strangled on her bed. He seduced the more attractive daughters and sister of the barons. Why has Matthew Paris changed the story slightly? What might other monks have said about John?

10 H OW D ID W E G ET THE S TORY OF J OHN THE B AD ? JR Green: In his inner soul John was the worst outcome of the Angevins. His punishments were refinements of cruelty, the starvation of children, the crushing of old men under copes of lead. His court was a brothel where no woman was safe from royal lust. He was superstitious but scoffed at priests. He turned his back on the mass even during his coronation, but he never went on a journey without relics round his neck.
