As he approached London he scared the English by burning farms and destroying crops and livestock. They would also have hated him because he was a foreign invader who had killed their elected king. The English had good reasons to hate the Normans because of the cruel way in which they dealt with rebellions. In the Harrying of the North, William destroyed the town of York and so many farms, crops and livestock that people starved to death. For many years parts of Yorkshire were uninhabited. The English also had a good reason to hate the Normans because of what happened to Hereward the Wake. He led the last English rebellion and William forced his way into the Fens and defeated their own hope of getting rid of the Normans.
