K-2 What does THANKFUL mean? thankful Being thankful means to be glad that something has happened or not happened, and expressing thanks. thankful thankful There are many things to be thankful for in our lives…for example school, family, friends. What are you thankful for in your life?

Every November, many people throughout the United States celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a special time to think about all of the things for which we are thankful. Please close your eyes and take one minute to think quietly about things you are thankful for? Who can tell me something they thought of for which they are thankful? Who are you thankful for at school? What are some things you are thankful for at school? Who are you thankful for at home? What are some things you are thankful for at home? K-2

Vo’s Activity Vo would like you to create a “thank you note” for someone you know. Please draw a picture and write 1-3 sentences to show thanks for something another person has done for you. When we are done, we will share our pictures and sentences! Remember to take time to deliver the thank you note to the person you chose. K-2

3-5 Every November, many people throughout the United States celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a special time to think about all of the things for which we are thankful. There are also two other important days in November. One is Veteran’s Day when we give thanks for all of the people who served in the military in the past and for those who are in the military. Another important date in November is election day. Why do you think election day is important?

Please close your eyes and take one minute to think quietly about what you are thankful for. Who can tell me something they thought of for which they are thankful? Who are you thankful for at school? What are you thankful for at school? Who are you thankful for at home? What are you thankful for at home? We often forget to thank people who do nice things for us or make us feel happy. So, let’s take a few minutes to write a 3-5 sentence thank you note to someone we have been meaning to thank. Take time this week to deliver your thank you note. 3-5

6-8 The theme pledge theme for November is “Be Thankful.” What is the main holiday many people celebrate in November to remind us how important it is to be Thankful? In November we have Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day; which is an important day for us to be thankful for all of the people who currently serve in the military or who have ever served in the military, and Election Day!

6-8 An interesting historical fact: In November of 1942, the minimum age someone could be drafted into the military was lowered from 21 to 18. But, it was not until a Supreme Court case in 1970 the age someone could vote was lowered from 21 to 18. So, there were almost 30 years that people ages 18 to 20 years old were asked to fight for the country, but could not vote in the elections. Please take a minute to read part of some testimony Ted Kennedy gave to Congress about this topic in 1970. Then, we will discuss it. 12 6-8 Vo’s Discussion Questions What is Kennedy’s opinion on this subject? Did he think the voting age should stay at 21 or be lowered to 18? Are there any facts that Kennedy offers to support his opinion? What are they? How else does Kennedy support his argument? What reasons does he give in this introduction for wanting to lower the voting age to 18? What is your opinion on this subject? Do you agree that the voting age should be 18? Can you think of any reasons it could be good for the voting age to be 21 instead? What is one law or piece of legislation for which you are thankful and why?
