4 SELF SUFFICIENCY Since the war started, German U-boats were sinking ships in the Atlantic Ocean so that no food from other countries got to the Allies so the Irish people had to become self sufficient. Since the war started, German U-boats were sinking ships in the Atlantic Ocean so that no food from other countries got to the Allies so the Irish people had to become self sufficient. Thousands of Irish people from the cities in Ireland volunteered to help farmers with their crops, because the weather was so bad that the fields were water logged and the crops had to be harvested by hand. They were also afraid that if the crops weren’t harvested in time that the people of Ireland could starve. 5 THE IRISH SUGAR BEET FACTORY IN CARLOW!!! The story of Carlow’s sugar factory began in 1925. The war of independence was over and Ireland had just been established as the free Sate. It was very important at the time to develop successful industries to support the young economy. If the Irish government could create enough jobs for the people, it could prove that the country could survive as an independent State. The story of Carlow’s sugar factory began in 1925. If the Irish government could create enough jobs for the people, it could prove that the country could survive as an independent State. It was decided that Sugar beet was the ideal crop to grow on an industrial scale. Carlow was selected as the best County for the factory, because it is situated in a rich tillage area and sugar beet was a crop well suited to the local growing conditions. Carlow also had good rail and waterway connections, so it’s produce could be transported conveniently around the Country. 6 ARDNACRUSHA The hydroelectric power station at Ardnacrusha, Co. Clare was built between 1925-1929 by the German Company Siemens Schuckertwerke. The power station required the construction of a weir on the river Shannon, spanned by four new bridges. The power station itself consists of an intake sluice house built on a mass-concrete gravity dam across the head race that regulates water to the turbines through four penstock tubes. The turbine building is a steel framed twelve bay six floor structure with a gabled roof built over the head race. The construction of the power was the single most important development carried out in Ireland in the 20th century. The total cost of the scheme was one fifth of the total annual revenue of the Irish free State at that time and when completed it provided almost the entire electricity demand of the state making Ireland largely self sufficient in energy for a number of years.
