2 The American legal system requires that every person be treated fairly.

3 This concept is known as due process of law.

4 Due process of law says that laws must be…

5 Reasonable,

6 Consistent,

7 and fair…

8 …for all citizens.

9 Due process helps get to the truth.

10 Over the years, the United States government has set up some basic rules for due process.

11 They include: Accused person has to be told of the charges against him.

12 Accused person has the right to a fair trial.

13 Accused person has the right to be present at his trial.

14 Accused person has the right to a fair jury.

15 Accused person has the right to speak and defend himself.

16 Laws must be clearly written so people can understand them.

17 Due process is an important concept in the U.S. Constitution.

18 Several amendments protect a citizen’s rights by due process:

19 The fifth Amendment says that no person shall be “deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.

20 The Fourteenth Amendment declares that no state can “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
