Over Land 2 1-Hz and 20-Hz Ku and C bands parameters (LRM/SAR), waveforms. Over Water LRM – Low resolution mode: default operation mode in open ocean SAR – Synthetic Aperture Radar mode: default operation mode over land and in ocean coastal areas

8 Altimeter and scatterometer seminar SMHI, March 2012 SWOT – CNES/NASA Surface Water hydrology and Ocean surface Topography mission Mission objective: to measure water level (and its space-time variation) of rivers, lakes and flooded zones as well as oceans. In order to overcome the main limitation of current altimetry (along-track low resolution data), the interferometric altimetry will enable to give a bi- dimentional image with an horizontal resolution of about 50-100 m. This technique also enables to overcome some limitations of conventional altimetry over land, i.e., the interference reflections problems due to dry grounds, the vegetation and the relief. 9 Altimeter and scatterometer seminar SMHI, March 2012 SWOT – CNES/NASA KaRIN includes two SAR antenna in Ka band at the end of 10 meters boom providing a ground track of 120 km large. It will include as well conventional nadir altimeter measurements With its large swath, SWOT satellite will cover all the lakes, rivers, reservoirs and oceans of the Earth, at least twice every 21 days.
