2 Reading Books – without words to start with, then progress onto books with words. Not a reading scheme, but access books from different schemes to ensure children get variety. How Often – At school at least weekly with a teacher, may have more. At home daily (weekends and holidays too) for approx 10 minutes.

3 What is phonics? Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language. The aim is to increase your child's ability to hear, identify, and manipulate letters and sounds. The goal of phonics is to enable beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns e.g. c-a-t cat

4 How do we teach phonics? Every day Follow Letters and Sounds 3 new sounds a week and a tricky word. Children will need to be using Phase 2 sounds, before they progress onto Phase 3 Songs, actions, objects, whiteboard work, flash cards, sound mats………. How can you help? Home Learning Sound Book Tricky Word Flash Cards Blending and Segmenting By letting the child have a go themselves. Internet/computer games: alphablocks/Ruth Miskin/phonics play.co.uk

7 Enjoy it! This is meant to be a fun and enjoyable way of developing your child's letters and sound knowledge. Support your child with their learning but the more you let your child do independently the more confident they will become!
