1 Phonics and Early Reading Parent Workshop

2 The aims of this workshop are: To share how phonics is taught at Seymour Park To develop parents’ confidence helping their children with phonics and reading To develop parents knowledge of early reading and how best to support a Child at home To give parents an opportunity to ask questions about phonics and reading

3 How is phonics taught? Throughout EYFS – KS1 Phases 1-6 Mostly within year group By a Teacher or Teaching Assistant Interactive games and activities Reading and writing

5 Phonics consists of: Identifying sounds in spoken words Recognising the common spellings of each phoneme. Blending phonemes into words for reading. Segmenting words into phonemes for spelling.

7 http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PicnicOnPlut o.html Phonics Screening Test in Year 1 Week commencing 15th June 2015 The phonics check helps teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2. The check comprises a list of 40 words and non-words which the child will read one-to-one with a teacher.
