EC Professional Support The University of Auckland 2014 5 Its about asking questions we don’t know the answer to! Evidence Based practice

Self-review in ECE… Review is the deliberate process of preparing, gathering, making sense of information, and deciding in order to bring about improvement. It offers opportunities for early childhood education services to evaluate the impact of practice on children’s learning. (Ministry of Education, 2006 p.7)

Types of self-review Strategic self review Long term, focused on core goals related to the centres strategic plan/vision Regular self review Smaller and on-going, about everyday practice Emergent/Spontaneous self review Reviews in response to unplanned matters that arise.

Why Undertake Review? * For Improvement – it enables us to find out about what is actually happening in our practice with the aim of continually improving our practice * For Accountability - it enables us to ensure we are meeting our legal requirements (Compliance) &

Why Review…? To uncover/find out what is ACTUALLY happening in our practice Not just what we THINK is happening… (what we espouse) So …..to find out what is actually happening we need to gather evidence …

Engaging in the self-review process… gives us the chance to ask ourselves… What is actually happening in practice? What could we be doing differently? What are we currently doing well?

A self-review process…

What does this step in the process involve ? What do we want to find out? What is our question? How do we plan to gather the information? Who will be involved in this review? What is the timeframe?

What does this step in the process involve? Gathering the information as per your plan The information you need that will support you to answer your question

Ways that you could gather information Request feedback (parents/whanau, children, teachers, community) Observation Review Documentation (portfolios, daily diary) Team meeting minutes Questionnaire/Surveys (consider the process) Group discussions It depends on what you are reviewing…

What does this step in the process involve? Looking at and analysing the information that we have gathered …what is this telling us about what is actually happening?

So, how do we make sense of the information we have gathered…? We must look closely at the information we have gathered Are Issues or information repeatedly coming up? Does this information reveal an emerging trend or a pattern Does this reveal something that we didn’t expect was happening…? (don’t over look this) One-off/unique pieces of information

What does this step in the process involve? Use the information to guide decisions about what we might now do as a result Deciding is the point where we consider what we should do as a result of what we have learnt through the self review and involves:

Deciding the point where we consider… What we should do as a result of what we have learnt through this self review process Deciding on what needs to happen based on the information we have gathered and analysed How we plan to go about Implementing changes and improvements to practice How we share the outcome of the review

A review schedule Embed review schedule within annual management /operations plan Include policy/procedural reviews, strategic reviews, planned reviews, while also space and time for spontaneous review. Its about the quality of review as a robust process – on occasions the outcomes of review can lead to some considerable changes and developments in practice.
