Background Metamovements is a non-profit dance company, based out of Boston, that was founded in 2006. It uses Cuban dancing as the platform to promote health and social change in communities and individuals. Funding for this program comes from grants, donations, and volunteers.

Objective To participate in the “Summer of Health”, which reaches out to Boston communities that are in need of public health programming but are less likely to attend a traditional program.

Activities Managed and trained teen interns in Community Outreach and Engagement strategies using curriculum development. Developed Community Outreach Strategies such as: flash mobs, social media campaigns, blogs, street teaming, chalking, and flyering. Engaged the Boston and Cambridge Communities during Salsa in the Park.

Rationale Using members of the community to spread the message to the community is an effective way to connect with the target audience. Using a variety of outreach strategies helps to attract a more diverse population. Creating stations for a variety of attendee desires make attendees feel connected to the mission of Salsa in the Park.

Anticipated Outcomes Increased attendance during Salsa in the Park Created tangible marketing materials. Empowered teens to spread information about health and social change. Increased sense of ownership among Salsa in the Park attendees.

Recommendations Higher attendance at Salsa in the Park can be utilized as an opportunity to continue engaging the community in health initiatives. Profiles of attendees should be used as another community outreach tool in order to bring in more community members.

" I went to Salsa in the Park for the first time last summer (2013). I was looking for free events to go to online when I came across Salsa in the Park. I didn't know how to dance salsa at first but I came anyways. I started learning and now I'm a part of the Meta Movements family. I really enjoy Salsa in the Park and I come every week."
