I-Phone By: Andrew Hicks COSC 316

It’s Creation The I-Phone began with Apple CEO Mr. Steven Jobs request that Apple engineers investigate touch-screens. At the time he had been considering having Apple work on tablet PCs (which is touch screen devices or basically anything not using keyboards or a mouse). On January 9th, 2007, Mr. Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving substantial media attention. AT&T/Cingular stores closed early Friday, June 29, 2007 to set up the displays for the first day of sells or thee I-Phone, reopening at 6pm to lines of customers.

What Is A “I-Phone”? The iPhone is a multimedia, Internet enabled mobile phone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It has a multi- touch screen with virtual keyboard and buttons.

It’s Features The I-Phone's functions include:  3.5 inch square touch screen  Camera Phone  Portable media player (“i-pod").  Text Messaging  Visual voicemail (which lets users see a list of voice messages and then choose which they want to hear)  E-Mail & Internet Access (thru local “Wi-Fi” connectivity)  Quad-Band (which uses the GSM standard and has international capability)

Sells-Marketing On June 29, 2007 the I-Phone went on sell for the price of $499 with a two year contract. If you wanted to double memory space then you could buy the 8GB version of the I-Phone for the low price of $599. On July 25, 2007 Apple announced that they sold 270,000 I-Phones in the first 30 hours on launch weekend. AT&T reported 146,000 I-Phones activated in the same time period. On September 5, 2007, Mr. Steven Jobs announced that the I-Phone price would be reduced just 10 weeks after its introduction. The 4GB will cost $299 and the 8GB will cost $399……Mr. Jobs stated “This move is for the desire to position the phone for the upcoming holiday shopping season at the best price possible”. On September 10, 2007, Apple announced sales of 1 million I-Phones sold. This is less than 3 months after its introduction.

Are There Any Problems ? The I-Phone should only be able to be operated by AT&T/Cingular but on July 3, 2007, A man named “Jon Lech Johansen” reported on his blog that he had successfully bypassed this requirement and unlocked the I-Phone's other features with a combination of custom software and modification of the iTunes binary. He published the software for others to use. One major problem with the I-Phone is the battery. Because the unit is sealed, Approximately every two years the phone must be sent to Apple for a new battery.

Future  The I-Phone was named Time magazine's "Invention of the Year" in 2007.  A new version of Apple's iPhone will be introduced in 2008 that is capable of operating on faster 3G cellular networks.

Conclusion The I-Phone is one the best inventions I have ever seen. So many capabilities, in such a small size. I can only imagine what the future holds for this phone, But the thought of it being improved is frightening. What more could you ask for in a phone.
