1 Haiku, Twaiku, and Cinquain Page 494 CCRS – W.9-10.4, W.9-10.10, RL.9-10-10, SL.9- 10.1, L.9-10.1, L.9-10.2, L.9-10.5, L.9-10.6 Literary Skills – Understand the characteristics of haiku and cinquain.

2 Haiku Haiku – a 3 line Japanese poem usually about nature. It contains 17 syllables – 5 in line 1, 7 in line 2, 5 in line 3

3 Quickwrite (p. 494) Pick a special day of the year. Write down what you might hear, see, taste, smell, or touch on that day. Try to find images that reveal the way you might feel at a particular moment on that special day.

4 Haiku Haiku (p. 495) 1.Which haiku poems do not fit the 5, 7, 5 pattern? 2.Why do these poems not fit the pattern?

5 Twaiku A twaiku is three lines and seventeen syllables like a haiku, but it also limits how many characters (including spaces) are used; no more than 140. (The space at the end of the line must be counted.) Plain white pages wait (23 characters) For black ink to carve a path – (32 characters) Our dreams given life. 6 Quickwrite Make a list of at least three objects about which you have strong feelings. For each object, list the following: 1.words that describe the object 2.actions associate with that object 3.words that indicate how you feel about the object 4.synonyms (either literal or symbolic) for the object

7 Cinquain Cinquain – an invented form of poetry that follows certain unrhymed specifications.  Line 1 is 1 word (a noun)  Line 2 is 2 words that describe line 1  Line 3 is 3 words that show action (-ing words are good)  Line 4 is 4 words that convey a feeling  Line 5 is 1 word that renames line 1 (like a predicate nominative)

9 Activity Write your own original haiku, cinquain, and twaiku.  Your haiku and twaiku must fit the 5-7-5 pattern.  Use the handout for the twaiku  Your haiku should be about nature.  Your cinquain should fit the cinquain pattern.  You cinquain can be about any appropriate topic. (You may wish to consult your quickwrite notes.)  Make sure you title all three poems Read p. 490 & 491 Page 492 Questions 1-8 Bonus – Post one of your poems to the classroom website.
