3 The Age of Exploration A time period when Europeans began to explore the world Huge improvements in navigation, mapmaking, shipbuilding Caravels--ships were now designed to sail against the wind *Mercantilism – economic theory that the world has a fixed amount of wealth and that trade generates wealth Wanted to find a faster trade route to Asia for spices and tea

5 Christopher Columbus Thought that there was a shorter route to Asia by sailing west instead of around Africa In 1492 he discovered the Americas instead Natives were treated harshly—slavery including women as sex slaves Was on a quest to find gold and other riches

7 Bartolomeu Dias Portuguese explorer who sailed around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa Found route to Indian Ocean Europe and Asia formed trade relationships via sea routes

8 Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese explorer Made the first voyage that circumnavigated the globe He was looking for a western route to the Spice Islands Named the Pacific Ocean, discovered the Strait of Magellan, and observed Magellanic Clouds in space This was the final proof that the earth was round

10 Hernando Cortez Young Spanish explorer who heard stories of gold in Mexico and South America Cortez discovered the Aztec civilization led by *Montezuma The Aztecs outnumbered the Europeans but after 3 battles the natives gave up Europeans were “god-like” figures to the Natives

11 Biographies Atahualpa 1502-1533 Atahualpa was the last Inca king. He was brave and popular with the Inca army, but he didn’t rule for long. A Spanish friar offered Atahualpa a religious book to convince him he should accept Christianity. Atahualpa held the book to his ear and listened to it. When the book didn’t speak, he threw it on the ground. The Spaniards used this as a reason to attack. Source: A 2006 history textbook titled World History: Medieval to Early Modern Times. Questions (1) According to the textbook, what did Atahualpa do to the Bible? (2) Is this account reliable? Why or why not? (3) How could we find out if this account is accurate or not?
