How To Write a Catchy Title

A good Blog entry or essay needs a title, and the title should catch the readers attention. However, a catchy title can be really hard to come up with. Think of a title which will grab your audience!

1.Be smart and think. You can do it, you just don't know it. If it does not come to you after a couple minutes, do the next steps. They are very handy, so you should use them as well.

2.Write your Blog entry/essay. It is very difficult to sum up what the essay is all about unless you've already written an outline for it.

3.Determine your audience. You should have done this when you wrote your Blog entry/essay, but think about your audience again when deciding on a title. Your title may change depending on the audience. Put yourself in the audience’s shoes.

4. After you have determined your audience, imagine yourself as one of them. What would draw you to read your essay? Good content? Humor? Pick a few things your audience looks for in an essay.

5. Reflect the things the audience looks for in the title.

6. Re-read your essay and see if any good titles come to mind. You might be able to find a word or phrase in your essay that both captures your thesis (or theme) and your audience's imagination.

7. Try picking a few key words of your essay topic and entering them into a quotations search website! You may find a relevant quote. If you do, pick a fragment of it and use it as your title.

8. Do any television shows or songs come to mind when you think about your Blog entry/essay? If so, try imitating the TV show title or select a phrase from the song to use as your title.

9. Put yourself in the reader's shoes. Determine what is appropriate for the title.

10. Take important words right out of your book, it might help with making up your title.

10. Take important words right out of your book, it might help with making up your title.

Tips Your title should relate to your topic. You may want to make the last words of your essay be the title, so it all ties together Don't use many words. If you can sum up your topic in 4 words as opposed to 6, pick the 4 word option. However, don't sacrifice that perfect catchy title just because there is a shorter, more boring option. Try not to use too much scientific language. "The lifespan of a South American tree frog" may be more specific, but it is much less catchy than "It's a frog's life” Try to be enthusiastic about your topic. If you are enthusiastic, that will show through your title and your whole essay.

Remember this! Never use the words "you, I, us, or we". That shows a very young stage of writing skills. Don't make the title too obscure or too unclear. The title should give the potential reader some idea of what the article is about, and make them want to read it. Depending on the type of paper, you may want to go with a simple, basic title. Don't get too stressed out about finding the perfect title. The important thing is finishing the Blog entry/essay and letting people read it. Make sure that it has meaning and will catch your audience's attention right off the bat.
