2  Flatiron building under construction stands at intersection of 5 th avenue and 23 rd street in NYC. Opened 22 story steel framed landmarked in 1902.  Louis Sullivan designed the 10 story Wainwright building in St. Louis in 1890-1891.  Empire State building - 1931, ‘1,046 – foot skyscraper in Midtown, Manhattan.

3  The Brooklyn Bridge looms majestically over NYC’s East River linking the two boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Since 1883, it’s granites towers and steel cables have offered a safe and scenic passage to millions of commuters and tourist, trains and bicycles. Construction took 14 years, involved 600 workers and cost $15 million, that is more than $320million in today’s money. People even died during the process including it’s original designer. Now more than 125 years old, this iconic feature of the NYC skyline still carries roughly 150,000 vehicles and pedestrians every day.

4  History through Architecture  The Chicago Plan  The Chicago Plan was made by Daniel Burnham. It was a map of Chicago.  Chicago went from 30,000 people in 1850 to 300,000 in 1870. Therefore needing The Chicago plan for expansion.  Agriculture  -1st Design was Chicago’s Lakefront  oWould have beaches, playing fields, and playgrounds.  -2nd design was the neighborhood parks  oWhere the cities could not claim a lakefront vista for recreation  -3rd Built Harbors  oShipping businesses depended on Harbors.  oHad recreation and commercial purposes  -4th built the Civic Center  oLong streets that converge on a grand plaza.  oHelped create a unified city from a host of neighborhoods.

5  -Streetcars had always been a type of transportation since before the civil war.  -In the 1870’s- 1880’s street cars began to be pulled by underground moving cables vs before when they were pulled by horse over iron rails embedded in city streets.  -1888 Richmond, Virginia was the first city to electricity its urban transit.  -By the turn of the 20Th century intricate networks of streetcars (trolleys) ran from outlying neighborhoods to downtown offices to department stores.  -Large cities like New York moved streetcars underground creating subways and other moved them far above street level  -Creating elevated trains.
