3 The President’s Job Description The President’s Roles Chief of State- term for the President as the ceremonial head of the United States.

4 President’s Roles cont. Chief Executive- term for the President as vested with the executive power of the United States.

5 President’s Roles cont. Chief Administrator- term for the President as head of the administration of the federal government.

6 President’s Roles cont. Chief Diplomat- term for the president as the main architect of foreign policy and spokesman to other countries.

7 President’s Role cont. Commander in Chief- term for the president as the commander of the nation’s armed forces.

8 President’s Role cont. Chief Legislator- term for the President as architect of public policy and the one who sets the agenda for Congress.

9 President Qualifications 1) Natural Born Citizen 2) At least 35 years old 3) 14 years as resident of the United States

10 The President’s Term Alexander Hamilton- established the 4 year term. Franklin D. Roosevelt- broke the unwritten rule of “no third term” 22 nd Amendment- made the unwritten custom part of the written Constitution

11 President’s Pay and Benefits Presidents pay can not be increased or decreased during term in office. Salary- in 1789= $25,000 per year. Today it is $400,000 per year. Benefits- $50,000 allowance, House, Medical, Dental, Camp David, ect.

12 Succession Presidential Succession- scheme by which the presidential vacancy is filled. John Tyler- in 1841 was the first Vice President to take office after President Harrison’s death. 25 th Amendment- adopted the common practice of V.P. succession.

13 Vice President 1)Preside over the Senate. 2) Decide the question of Presidential Disability. Balance the Ticket- When a presidential candidate chooses a running mate who can strengthen his chance of being elected.
