2 Skyscrapers: Architects were able to create these large buildings because of the invention of the elevator and the development of internal steel skeletons Electric Transit: By the turn of the 20 th century intricate networks of trolley cars ran from outlying neighborhoods to downtown offices and department stores. This helped residents to commute to downtown jobs. Engineering and Urban Planning: City planners sought to restore a measure of serenity to the environment by designing recreational areas. TECHNOLOGY AND CITY LIFE

3 Printing: Advancements in printing helped publishers turn out increasing numbers of books magazines and newspapers to meet growing demand. Airplanes: By 1920 the U.S. government had established the first transcontinental airmail service. Frist airplane created by the Wright brothers. Photography: George Eastman created the first 100 picture film role camera, and is known as the Kodak. NEW TECHNOLOGY

4 Amusement Parks: Created to meet the recreational needs of city dwellers. Bicycling and Tennis: By 1888 many Americans had taken up biking and tennis as a regular activity Spectator Sports: Sports like boxing and baseball became very popular, and by the turn of the 20 th century they had become profitable businesses. Baseball: By the 1890s baseball had a real game schedule, official rules and a standard size diamond. AMERICAN LEISURE

5 Circulation Newspapers: By 1898 the circulation of each newspaper had reached more than one million copies a day and became a major source of American information. Promoting Fine Arts: Art galleries became a pleasurable asset for Americans. Popular Fiction: Novelist Mark Twain was popular for inspiring and declaring “independence of literature and all that bosh.” SPREAD OF MASS CULTURE

6 Urban Shopping: Retail shopping districts formed where public transportation could easily bring shoppers for outlying areas. Department Store: Marshal Field of Chicago first brought the department store concept to America Chain Store: Retail stores offering the same stuff under the same ownership and sold the same goods for less by buying in quant and limiting personal service. Advertising: Advertisers used methods such as newspaper and magazine articles to push products. Catalogs and RFD: The rural free delivery system brought packages directly to every home.
