2 The Beginning of British Control ~ 1750 the weakening of the Mughal Empire and struggle between the Hindu and the Muslims allowed the British East India to take control. The Sepoy Mutiny- 1. British greed and power grew = poor treatment of Indians 2. Sepoys (Indians working for the British) had enough and rebelled in 1857 when they were being mistreated and tricked (beef, pork fat*) 3. The mutiny crushed by British and after India was under full control of British Empire

3 During Control Britain = Raw materials, spices and food from India India = new roads, schools, and irrigation systems (help to modernize and industrialize India) Control over India gives British control in Asia and moves them closer to striking China (Opium War) India’s upper class = educated and forced assimilate but gained wealth and power. India’s lower class = less privileges and not happy with British control and forced change

4 Gandhi and independence Gandhi = led the fight for Indian independence from the British Empire organized non-violent civil disobedience campaigns and protests. Independence Indian National Congress- set up in late 1800’s and slowly banded together to fight for rights for India. Gains full Independence in 1947 after war had weakened the British Empire
