Natural Resources & Energy

Matter vs. Energy Natural Resources could be considered forms of Matter But what about the Energy they “create”…? Let’s look at some pics!!

Analyzing Images… Which of the pictures would you consider to represent a natural resource, and which would represent energy? What’s the difference/connection between them?

Analyzing Images… Which pictures represent a positive image, or a “clean” natural resource/energy source in your opinion? Why do you see them that way?

Natural Resources Natural resource - any energy source, organism, or substance found in nature that people use If these resources are used faster than they are replaced, they will run out. 

Renewable Resources Renewable resource- a natural resource that can be replaced in nature at about the same rate it is used

Examples of Renewable Resources Sunlight (Solar) Wind Water (Hydro) Trees and other plants Animal waste (Biomass) Geothermal Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Nonrenewable Resources Nonrenewable resource- a natural resource that is used up faster than it can be replaced in nature

Examples of Nonrenewable Resources Coal Oil(Fossil Fuels) Natural gas Uranium (Fuels Nuclear Power) Rocks, Minerals, Metals (Mining)

Natural Resource Simulation -Generation Bean You have a cup with a number on the bottom – 1, 2, 3 or 4 Generation 1’s come up and fill your cup with as many beans as you like –Followed by generation 2, then 3, then 4 What happens with each generation in terms of people and the resources?

Generation Bean Predict what type of resource each color of bean may represent… Black beans = ? Brown beans = ? White beans = ?

Generation Bean What’s the problem ? –If you took a full cup, that is enough natural resource energy for you, your children and your grandchildren…and you just used it for you  –If you took a half cup, that is enough for you and your children…and you wasted it  –If you took about a quarter cup, or just a couple beans that means you have enough for you AND you have conserved natural resource energy for future generations…yay!!!

Ok, Back to Your Predictions…Can We Fix This? Black beans = ? Brown beans = ? White beans = ? Would you be willing to give some back if you could?

Can We Fix This? Black Beans – represent oil, coal, natural gas. You should have the most of those since those are what we use the most of –Are they renewable or non- renewable? –So can we put any back?

Can We Fix This? Brown Beans – represent biomass. Biomass is a fancy name for material from plants and animals. Some kinds of biomass can be burned to produce energy. One common example is wood. Biomass contains stored energy. That's because plants absorb energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis. When biomass is burned, this stored energy is released as heat. –Are they? renewable or non-renewable –So we should be able to put them all back right…????

PUMP The Movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?feat ure=player_embedded&v=W5HFqAb Ognshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?feat ure=player_embedded&v=W5HFqAb Ogns

Can We Fix This? White Beans – represent electricity…we use A LOT of electricity in the United States compared to the rest of the world –Is something like electricity renewable or non- renewable?

Is something like electricity renewable or non-renewable? Electricity- usually produced by burning fossil fuels in processing plants, which "create" electricity in exchange for the fuel burned. The coal, oil or gasoline that powers the electricity-producing turbines- non-renewable, limited energy sources. However, sources such as solar, wind or geothermal power can also create electricity. These perpetual forces are always renewable.

Beans representing ELECTRICITY… Plain white beans = electricity created by renewable sources – can be put back..yay Black eyed peas = electricity created by non renewable sources – cannot be put back 

While I collect your supplies…. In your notebook (still on p 16), brainstorm a list of AT LEAST 5 things that YOU can do to CONSERVE RENEWABLE & NON- RENEWABLE RESOURCES for future generations!!

Question: So, why don’t we use more renewable natural resources to create energy?

Answer: Because just like everything there are Pros & Cons to each energy source…what could they be? You should be able to come up with : 3 pros and 3 cons for each energy source!

Pros & Cons – Nonrenewable Fossil Fuels Nuclear (uranium) Rocks, minerals, metals (mining)

Basic Pros & Cons for Nonrenewable: Pros Usually cheap & easy to use Produce a lot of power Already MAIN source for our economy/society Cons Damage the environment Won’t last forever/may cause conflict (overseas) Can be dangerous

Pros & Cons - Renewable Hydro Biomass Geothermal Solar Wind

Basic Pros & Cons for Renewable Pros Continuous & reliable source of energy Inexpensive once installed & prices remain stable Low pollution Cons High development costs Not always available everywhere Usually NOT as powerful

Quick Brainstorm/Ticket Out p.16: Why is any of this Important?

Energy Proposal Project Example My Location: Los Angeles, California My Resource: Biodiesel powered cars My Inspiration: The smog/air pollution problem AND the Rob & Big episode where they convert Big’s car to run on oil from fast food restaurants

Pros & Cons of Energy Sources You must complete the initial background research on each energy source before you make the decision for your project! You also should have brought with you a website to start your research…

Energy Proposal Plan Look at my example & use the checklist provided to make sure that you meet all requirements!! Read them NOW…do you have any questions? * Does NOT have to be typed, but it must be NEATLY hand written!
