8 Vocabulary Words Non-renewable resource – an energy resource that takes millions of years to form from the remains of plants and animals such as coal, oil, and natural gas Renewable resource – an energy resource that is replaceable by natural means such as trees or wind Inexhaustible resource – an energy resource immediately replace and will not run out Biomass – biological material such as plants material or animal waste converted to a useable energy source, a renewable resource

9 Vocabulary Words Solar energy – the Sun’s energy is collected and converted to useable energy, an inexhaustible resource Geothermal energy – heat is harnessed (captured) from deep beneath the Earth’s surface and converted to a useable energy, an inexhaustible resource Hydropower – the movement of water moving through a dam is converted to a useable energy, a renewable resource Wind energy – turbines harness (capture) the movement of air and convert it to useable energy, an inexhaustible resource

10 Vocabulary Words Nuclear power – the splitting of uranium atoms to release energy; nonrenewable resource Natural gas – a gas usually found above petroleum deposits and burned to obtain energy, a non-renewable fossil fuel Petroleum/Oil – liquid petroleum formed from once living marine organisms and burned to obtain energy, a non-renewable fossil fuel Coal – a hard, black substance extracted from the ground and burned to obtain energy, a non-renewable fossil fuel
