3 Increasing % of People in Cities 47% of people live in cities in the year 2000 compared to 30% in 1950 MDC’s 3/4 of people live in urban areas LDC’s 2/5 of people live in urban areas Latin America is only exception

5 In MDC’s over last 200 years, rural residents have migrated to work in factories and services concentrated in cities The need for fewer farmers have pushed people to cities MDC’s are now fully urbanized because the % of urban residents is so high, this is due to people have already left the rural areas leaving the others choosing to stay

6 Increasing # of People in Cities MDC’s have a higher % of urban residents, but LDC’s have more of the very large urban settlements 6 of 10 most populous cities are in LDC’s –Delhi, Jakarta, Mexico City, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Seoul 4 are in MDC’s –Los Angeles, New York, Osaka, and Tokyo

14 Physical Definitions of Urban Settlement City – urban settlement that has been legally incorporated into an independent, self-governing unit. Has locally elected officials, ability to raise taxes, and responsibility for providing essential services Urbanized area – central city and surrounding built up area/suburbs where pop density exceeds 1,000 per sq. mile

15 Physical Def.’s Cont’d Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) –Urbanized area w/ population of at least 50,000 –County within which the city is located –Adjacent counties with high pop density and large percentage of residents working in central city’s county Micropolitan Statistical Area – all same characteristics w/ pop. Of 10k – 50k ppl
