2 NIPS ‘97 Sofia, October 14-16 1997 Broadband Network Architectures: Evolution towards Distributed Intelligence Motivation ATM and optical switching will increase the capacity of backbone networks xDSL and wireless access technologies will bring low-cost broadband access available to the residential users Result: Bandwidth will become a commodity, which makes services the most critical component of the future broadband networks

TCP/IP or SS#7, is needed for carrying CORBA requests Is ATM signalling needed anymore?
