At Clapgate Primary School we strive to have a fun filled, active and exciting PE curriculum. Currently we follow the Real PE scheme which not only focuses on the teaching of essential multi-skills children need to develop, but enhances children in a holistic way. Socially challenging them, allowing them to set and achieve personal goals, helping them to become resilient and great team players, even developing their cognitive abilities through building strategies and understanding logistics of a range of games.

It is important at Clapgate that all children are challenged through PE at their own personal level and that every child can enjoy and achieve in PE to the best of their ability. Real PE is giving us a wide scope of ideas to enhance PE teaching in our school as well as giving the children a real sense of ownership on their physical education. The scheme follows on year by year giving us an extremely positive outlook on the future of the schools PE teaching as the children become more familiar in learning within this creative curriculum. Our Year 4 children also have swimming lessons each week as one of their PE lessons.

Outside of our rich PE curriculum, we are a part of Active Leeds which involves our school in a broad range of fantastic sporting events and competitions. It also gives us the opportunity to develop our PE teaching through CPD and training events. The local JESS Cluster which we are also a part of, allows us to take a wide range of children from across all ages in the school to partake in sports amongst schools in our area. Competitions such as athletics, mini-tennis, dance and trampolining are only a few of the exciting events the children have took part in. Doing such sports outside of school reinforces the children’s skills they have learnt throughout our curriculum. Upcoming competitions include, tag rugby, netball, cross-country and many more.

Furthermore, we have Premier Sport coaches who come into our school. These coaches are used to enhance the opportunities of games and competition throughout lunchtime. The coaches provide the children with resources and games to play which ensures that children are active outside. Since having the sports coaches at lunchtimes the participation and enthusiasm of the children to play games at lunch and be active has risen and there is a noticeable difference in the way the treat and play with each other, developing their social skills tremendously. These sports coaches also teach some of the PE lessons in the school giving the children high quality teaching by PE specialists.

After school clubs are very important at Clapgate. Along with a range of extra-curricular activities available to the children most days after school, we ensure there are also sporting activities for the children to be included in. Clubs such as athletics, mini- tennis and running club are sports we have focused on afterschool. Football clubs also run for each Key stage in the school by Premier Sport coaches who also organise regular fixtures for the football teams including league games and friendly games.
