Moving to Active Directory

What is Active Directory? Active Directory (AD) is a Microsoft tool for managing people’s access to network resources (i.e. The “G: drive”). We currently use a Novell product to serve our “G: Drive.”

Why are We Doing This? We need to be part of the University’s IT strategy. –We no longer use Meeting Maker, because it’s easier for us to work in the University environment with a single tool (UM Cal). Opportunity to commit our technical resources to new and innovative products. Cost savings through volume licensing.

What Do I Have to Do Now? Activate your Active Directory Account. –https://wiki.umn.edu/twiki/bin/view/ASRwiki/ActivateAdEmail Watch for new tasks. –This move is mandatory.

PC Network Support Begins Background Work PC Network Support must: –Create everyone’s new “H: Drive.” –Setup security and access control. –A new higher level directory structure is being designed and must be implemented. None of this can begin until all AD accounts are initiated.

Next Steps Assign file & folder movers Cleanup files & folders Move files & folders

Assign File & Folder Movers We will be assigning movers for our existing folders. We will contact you. –Movers can choose to delegate subdirectories We are publishing our list of assignees. –https://wiki.umn.edu/twiki/bin/view/ASRwiki/CurrentGdriveDirectoryOwners We will provide file owner reports. No one will review your “H: Drive.”

Cleanup Files & Folders Many people chose to do this when they moved their email. We are publishing the new structure that will appear on AD. –http://intranet.asr.umn.edu/directorymockup/ –Please review this as you will be asked to fit your shared files into this structure.

Move Files & Folders Each “file mover” will be responsible for dragging and dropping files into their new home. We will work with you to maintain critical security and privacy settings. We will phase out the “G: Drive” in phases –https://intranet.asr.umn.edu/ad/

Questions or Comments Please visit the ASR Intranet to find out more. –http://intranet.asr.umn.edu (click the “Active Directory Move” link under “ASR Initiatives”) Submit comments through “What Do You Think.” –https://intranet.asr.umn.edu/new/whatdoyouthink.asp Or, email Skeeter at skeeter@umn.edu
