PLANT NOMENCLATURE

Plant Nomenclature How many plants are on this Earth ? 400,000 Why is it important to name plants? Ancient people needed to communicate about which plants were edible, poisonous or could be used medicinally They needed to identify plants to be used for fiber or for shelter Names varied from region to region and among different languages

Naming Plants Problems with common naming include: One plant having many common names Many different plants having the same common name, for example: “Creeping Jenny” can apply to 15 different plants 3

Plant Nomenclature Botanical Nomenclature is the system orderly classifying and naming plants (1737) Carl Von Linne- started the Binomial System of naming plants 2 word scientific name; 1. Genus 2. specific epithet (species) Each plant has only one valid Scientific Name!!!!

Nomenclature – The Common Name Plants may have common names can vary from locality, person to person, culture differences etc Tulip poplar or yellow poplar or tulip tree??? Tulip magnolia or saucer magnolia or tulip tree??? It all depends on where you live in the US

Bionomial Names Naming plants are given in Latin 1. Genus  Generic name for a plant group (Quercus) 2. Specific Epithet  Scientific name for one plant (alba) EX. Quercus alba (White Oak) Ex. Tuliptree - Liridendron tulipifera Most landscapers use common names when Communicating with their customers. However, when ordering plants from plant nurseries reading professional literature or communicating with other Professionals around the country scientific names are used

Why Latin? Was the language of scholars Is a dead language Does not continually change Politically neutral Very descriptive Quercus macrocarpa is a bur oak which has large acorns. “Macro” means large and “carpa” means fruit 7 Bur Oak Acorn

Genus vsSpecies Is closely related group of plants compromised on one or more species. Classification are based on 1.Structure of Flower and/or Fruit 2.Structure of Leaves 3.Buds, roots & steams Generic name is written with a CAPITAL letter & is underlined or Italicized Composed of plants that show characteristics that distinguish them from other groups of genus. Specific Epithet is written in lower case & underlined or italicized Groups of plants

 Mitosis vs Meiosis

 Types of Plant Groups  Variety:  Group of plants within a species that show significant differences from other plant species  Passed down through sexual reproduction  Mitoses  Cultivar:  Distinguishing characteristics from the other plants in the species but do not transfer characteristics to their offspring through sexual reproduction.  They must be propagated asexually to transfer their characteristics Meiosis

 Divide up into 2 groups Assingment 1  Define Mitosis  Describe the process and key terms  You will need research and present this process to the class. Use prezi powerpt etc to present your findings  Create a 10 pt quiz  Define Meiosis  Describe the process and key terms  You will need research and present this process to the class. Use prezi powerpt etc to present your findings  Create 10 pt quiz

  Rhizomes  Bulb  Runner  Tuber  Cutting  Grafting  Budding  Layering  Tissue Culture  Division  Separation Asexual Reproduction Asexual vs sexual reproduction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU2 vg9F0qF4

 One of the first things to consider in the selection of plants for landscaping is the appearance of the plant  Quality of plants have Four-Season Value  Plants has attractive quality at any time of the year 1. Flowers, Healthy, looking – in the summer 2. Beautiful Fall color & fruit Effects 3. Have symmetrical shape or form SELECTING PLANTS

  Factors of Plant Selection 1. Plant Location – pH 2. Sunlight Requirements 3. Size & Growth 4. Function – Ex. Shade vs Ornamental 5. Appearance 6. Climate – (zones) Hot /Cold & pest Plant Selection
