2 Cardiologists are the doctor s of heart. They treat patients with many different medical conditions. For example, they may treat patients with heart defects, heart infections, heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), or hypertension (high blood pressure). After diagnosing the problem, the cardiologist begins treatments. This often involves prescribing medication for the patient. Sometimes it also means advising the patient to make some lifestyle changes. For example, a patient may need to get more exercise, eat healthier food, and stop smoking.
