2 Definition y Endocrinology- is the study of the various hormones and their actions and disorders in the body. Glands like the pancreas produce hormones (Ctrl-click to access page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find two great videos)

3 Responsibilities o Endocrinologists have the knowledge and training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems within the human body They can help to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body such as administrating insulin to patients with type 1 diabetes These doctors analyze blood sugar levels with their patients and make appropriate changes with his or her basal rate, target area, and carb to insulin ratio

4 Earnings n The typical average salary range for an endocrinologist with one year of experience is $79,000 to $176,000 per year. Although the normal salary is around $193,000

5 Advancements b Those training to further specialize in diabetes need experience in eye, blood vessel and kidney diseases associated with diabetes. They also need to train in diabetic foot care to prevent gangrene in diabetic patient’s feet and amputation of limbs.

6 Job Outlook e Work hours can range from a set schedule to an extremely off and on type schedule depending on the patient and his or her issues You can work in an office setting on your own or with partners Jobs in the hospital are also available Employment is increasing about 20%-28% through 2020

7 Education l You need to get a bachelor's degree that includes a lot of studying in biology, physics and chemistry. Apply to a MD program at an accredited medical school. This is very competitive and usually requires high MCAT scores along with good grades, above 3.6 GPA Then you need to get into a 3-year internal medicine residency program, basically an apprenticeship. This is then followed by a 2-year fellowship to get training in the subspecialty of endocrinology. To get certified you need to complete a three step examination two of which are taken while your MD schooling is going on and then one during your apprenticeship. Finally to achieve your certification for Endocrinology you need to pass a written portion of yet another test
