1. Regression of society and Rise of the Church

2.  After the fall of Rome people turned to the church for help.  The church fills the void of power left by the Roman empire.

3.  Clovis I- Leader of the Franks, converts to Christianity.  Franks convert to Christianity and respecting the churches power.

4.  hierarchy (chain of command): Pope- leader of the church Bishop- oversees a diocese (collection of parishes) Priest- leader of a parish (local Church)

5.  The Ordeal- trial held by the church in order to uphold justice. Believed divine intervention would save people. *boiling oil, and hot stone test

6.  St. Benedict (480- 547)- Monk who established Monasticism (devoting yourself to spiritual work in monasteries)  St. Gregory (590-604)- Established the power and responsibilities of the Pope

7.  Monks- educated Christians, only people who could read and write during the dark ages  Nuns- Females who dedicated their lives to god.

9.  Emperor Justinian- Wants to unite Roman Empire again  Puts down a large revolt in Constantinople, 30,000 people die (shows his authority)

10. Justinian Reclaims most of the lost Roman Empire.  Justinian’s Code- creates code of laws for byzantine empire  Creates the Hagia Sophia- Large church in Constantinople

11.  Plague of Justinian (542 A.D.)- kills 25-50% of Constantinople  Justinian will get the plague, but survive  Byzantine reigns for another 1000 years.
